Il Sereno, Lake Como

30th March 2019

Driving from Milan Malpensa Airport, the journey to Il Sereno took approx 1 hour. This was my first trip to Lake Como. Italy is my favourite country to visit and I was very excited to finally tick off Como from my list!! I was hoping it would live up to Grey Malin’s famous photographs!!!

Once we hit Como town we started to catch glimpses of the glorious Lago. The winding lake road took us from Como, round through Blevio and finally up to Torno.

The driver started to indicate before swooping down a small side road towards the lake. After a few seconds the hotel came into view. It was like arriving into another world. The hotel looks uber stylish yet unimposing by the glittering lake.

After being greeted by 2 very pleasant members of staff our bags were whisked away and we were taken to the hotel lobby. We passed through some very pretty gardens and over a jetty that offered views of the super cool infinity pool, sun deck and of course the lake.

It really was an impressive arrival. The scenery was truly beautiful. The hotel which was designed by Patricia Urquiola is impressive and modern however it fits into the landscape quite discretely.

The hotel offers 30 suite style rooms. Each suite boasts views of the lake. My room comprised of a lounge area, bedroom, very spacious bathroom and balcony. I couldn’t fault any part of the room or its facilities. Its probably the most luxurious room I have ever stayed in.

On the first evening we dined in Berton Al Lago by Andrea Berton. The cuisine is Italian with a modern touch. The restaurant has 1 Michelin star however it has a very relaxed atmosphere and is not pretentious at all. The restaurant has lovely views across the lake. This restaurant is also the location for breakfast. Breakfast is a very special affair at Il Sereno. Once seated at your table you are treated to a selection of pastries, fruit, teas and coffee. Waitresses come round throughout breakfast to offer a variety of sweet and savoury treats that are tantalisingly displayed on silver trays. It’s hard to say no, be prepared to over indulge. I did! There is also a extensive menu of hot and cold dishes that can be ordered from the kitchen.

There are a number of activities to get involved in at the hotel. The swimming pool is quite spectacular. As you do laps up and down the pool you feel as though you are on a film set! There is also a small spa that is located in the old boat house. The gym is well equipped and there is a personal trainer on hand if needed, (after you’ve been to breakfast!)

One of the most exciting things to take advantage of during your stay is the sailing. Guests are welcome to take out one of the hotels Riva Motorboats. You don’t need a license on Como. Therefore you can nip out for the day with or without a driver. We decided to go it alone, acquiring a map from reception before we set off. You can then pin point all the sights you would like to take in including Bellagio, Villa del Balbianello, and of course George Clooney’s house!!!!

After a few nights at Il Sereno you really do feel serene! The hotel is super cool and you leave feeling tranquil and revitalised.
